The Order of Service

What to Expect on Sunday

On most Sundays, our service is the liturgy of the Holy Eucharist. This liturgy, as contained in The Book of Common Prayer (1979 edition), broadly follows a pattern of Christian worship that has developed since the time of the early church.

01

GATHER

We come together in prayer, song, and worship

We begin with praise to God.

02

SCRIPTURE

We listen to readings from the Bible and a sermon

We hear several readings from the Bible (including a passage from one of the Gospels). A sermon expounds on the scriptures we've heard.

03

PRAYER

We pray together for one another and for the world

Together we confess what we believe by saying one of the ancient creeds of the church. Then together we offer prayers for the church and for the world.

04

COMMUNION

Bread and wine are shared as we receive Holy Communion

Bread and wine are offered, and the priest leads us in a prayer of thanksgiving over these gifts, that they may become for us the Body and Blood of Christ. In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians, regardless of age or denomination, are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you are not baptized or do not wish to receive Communion, you are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at the altar during the administration of Communion.

05

SENT FORTH

We are sent into the world to live out our faith

Having received anew the strengthening grace of God in the Sacrament, we are dismissed and sent out into the world in peace, 'to love and serve the Lord.'

What Worship is Like

Sunday worship is at the center of our community life.

Like the earliest Christians, we gather on the first day of the week, the Day of the Resurrection, to worship God together.

Liturgical

Prayers are written and follow set and ancient forms.

Sacramental

Focused on receiving God's grace through outward and visible signs, especially the Holy Communion.

Participatory

We worship in community, and everyone has their part to play. The service is provided in a printed booklet, directing the congregation how to respond.

What to Wear

Come As You Are

There is no dress code at St. Timothy's. You will see some people dressed in their 'Sunday best' and others dressed more casually. Please wear whatever you feel comfortable with, and know that you will be welcomed.

Children & Childcare

Children Are Welcome

During the program year, Children's Sunday School is offered weekly from 9:30–10:15.

Childcare is offered in our nursery during the 10:30 service (program year) and during the 9:30 service (summer schedule). Children are always welcome throughout the service.

A Children's Chapel service is offered during part of the 10:30 service on the first Sunday of each month.
